Irish Dance Shoes; The Broga Rince Selection
Irish Dance Shoes come in two distinctly different carieties,
hard-soled and soft-soled.
- Soft Shoes (Pumps)
Similar to ballet shoes in many
respects, pumps are used for four basic dances: The
Reel, The Light Jig, The Single Jig and the Slip Jig.
The main distinction between men’s and women’s
soft shoes is that men’s have heels, whilst
women’s do not.
- Hard Shoes
These are the shoes used in such shows
as ‘Riverdance’ and ‘Lord
of the Dance’
The distinctive noise which everyone knows and loves
is made by a small piece of wood attached to the shoe’s
toe.

Caring for your Irish Dance Shoes
Never Use A Liquid Polish
Liquid products will (under certain circumstances) aid the drying process and
increase the risk of damage.
To keep your Irish Dance Shoes in perfect condition, be sure to use a wax based
polish.
Take Care When Storing Your Shoes
If you store your shoes in a hot, dry environment, you are
actually aiding the drying process.
Similarly, never drench them during cleaning; a damp cloth
is more than enough.
Always Buy Quality
If your shoes are of a high quality with leather insoles,
you are helping your feet to breathe and reduces sweating. Since perspiration
contains salt (which dries the leather) this also helps to increase
your shoe’s durability.
Preserve Your Shoes
Using a product such as ‘Hide Food’ will keep the leather
soft & supple, whilst at the same time preserving it.
Take Care With Your Laces
Repeatedly having to force your foot into a fully-laced
shoe can cause major damage to the stiffened heel, so be sure to un-lace
them after each wear.
Furthermore, be sure to use a shoehorn if your Irish Dance
Shoes are tight, as ‘fidgeting’ your way into your shoe
will inevitably cause major damage over time.
Avoid Personal Injury
It may seem like common sense, but dancing on surfaces not
designed for the task (concrete, asphalt, etc.) will not only cause
damage to your shoes, but can also result in personal discomfort or
even long-term injuries.
Not Everyone Is The Same
Neither are their feet; so don’t lend your shoes to other dancers
if you want to keep them in top condition.
Name Your Shoes
Of course we don’t mean giving your Irish Dance Shoes individual
names; that would be silly.
But if you write your name on their soles you not only reduce
the chances of them getting lost during repairs, but also another dancer
accidentally using them.
Wear In Your Shoes
Before wearing your new Irish Dance Shoes to a feis (Competition)
or class, be sure to wear them in around the house for at
least two hours.
